Properties

KeyValue
bodyAn electric arc is hotter than the surface of the sun, and it gives off four things at once: ultraviolet and infrared light, molten spatter, fumes, and enough current to stop a heart. The light is the one beginners underestimate. A few seconds of unshielded arc light burns the surface of the eye. It does not hurt at the time; it wakes you at night feeling like sand under the eyelids. Welders call it arc eye. The same light sunburns bare skin through a thin shirt. Spatter is drops of molten metal. It finds the gap between a glove and a sleeve, rolls into an open boot, and sets fire to anything that burns within several metres. Fumes depend on what you are welding. Clean mild steel is the mildest. Galvanised steel gives off zinc fume that causes a fever-like illness for a day; stainless gives off chromium compounds that are worse over years. Paint, oil and plating all burn into something you should not breathe.
